چکیده
Abstract Microswimmer suspensions in Newtonian fluids exhibit unusual macroscale properties, such as a superfluidic behavior, which can be harnessed to perform work at microscopic scales. Since most biological are non-Newtonian, here we study the rheology of microswimmer suspension weakly viscoelastic shear flow. At individual level, find that stresses generated by activity substantially modify Jeffery orbits well-known from fluids. The orientational dynamics depends on swimmer type; especially pushers resist flow-induced rotation and align an angle with To analyze its impact bulk rheology, dilute presence random tumbling rotational diffusion. Strikingly, elastic response polymeric alter distribution amplify swimmer-induced viscosity. This suggests pusher reach regime lower volume fractions compared fluid identical

Extensional rheology of active suspensions.
A simple model is presented for the effective extensional rheology of a dilute suspension of active particles, such as self-propelled microswimmers, extending previous classical studies on suspensions of passive rodlike particles. Neglecting particle-particle hydrodynamic interactions, we characterize the configuration of the suspension by an orientation distribution, which satisfies a Fokker-P...
متن کاملRheology of active-particle suspensions.
We study the interplay of activity, order, and flow through a set of coarse-grained equations governing the hydrodynamic velocity, concentration, and stress fields in a suspension of active, energy-dissipating particles. We make several predictions for the rheology of such systems, which can be tested on bacterial suspensions, cell extracts with motors and filaments, or artificial machines in a...
متن کاملFluctuations and rheology in active bacterial suspensions.
We probe nonequilibrium properties of an active bacterial bath through measurements of correlations of passive tracer particles and the response function of a driven, optically trapped tracer. These measurements demonstrate violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and enable us to extract the power spectrum of the active stress fluctuations. In some cases, we observe 1/sqrt[omega] scali...
متن کاملRheology dynamics of aggregating colloidal suspensions.
We study a colloidal model based on population balances in the context of complex fluid rheology. Two typical particle microstructure kinetics, orthokinetic, collisions due to shear, and perikinetic, collisions due to Brownian motion, are found to appear at continuum as different flow behaviors - those having monotonic and non-monotonic flow curves, respectively. Solving the colloidal model tog...
متن کاملNewtonian Limit for Weakly Viscoelastic Fluid Flows
This article addresses the low Weissenberg asymptotic analysis (Newtonian limit) of some macroscopic models of viscoelastic fluid flows in the framework of global weak solutions. We investigate the convergence of the corotational Johnson-Segalman, the FENE-P, the Giesekus and PTT models. Relying on a priori bounds coming from energy or free energy estimates, we first study the weak convergence ...
